A ceremonious opening of video club "Movie Tuesdays" took place September 5. All people who wanted to watch the best examples of the world cinematography in English were invited to the opening which was held within IRP "Window on America". Students of Foreign Languages' Departments of Institutions of high education of the city, teachers, pupils from the specialized schools, gymnasiums and lyceums, scholars came to the presentation; after it the guests & everybody who desired were invited to watch DVD film "My Fair Lady" (1964). The information about the opening of video club was presented by the radio station "Our radio'', TTV channel & "Our newspaper" printed September 11, 2003 the material "Movie Tuesdays". American Peace Corps Volunteer Barbara Schlieper is working at "Window on America" videoclub since February 2004. These are Barbara's words about our co-operation: "Movie Tuesdays" provides an opportunity for me to meet and talk with Ukrainian teachers, students and community members who want to improve their spoken English and practice communication with a native speaker. We watch an hour of a selected American movie with English subtitles and discuss themes, cultural insights, historical background and check the understanding of plot, character, etc. Students often have questions about language, actions and motivations of the characters. Having the movies in DVD format makes it easy to pause the movie while I answer questions or explain confusing events. I plan to continue to offer "Tuesday at the Movies" during my service in Kirovohrad which will end in December of 2005. The staff at "Window on America" has been helpful and enthusiastic and I enjoy working with them. I look forward to bringing many Ukrainians to a closer understanding of our culture and our language and thank them for their generosity in sharing their country and culture with me".
